Largehearted Boy, a music and literature website, this week highlighted a playlist that provides a musical pathway into Cork Wars.
As I told David Gutowski, music plays a big role for me while writing. And music triggered key memories for the people I interviewed for the book. Sometimes the songs that lingered in their minds and stories segued in my mind to other sounds.
The playlist on Spotify reflects the story’s main characters: a Baltimore-born business mogul named Charles McManus; a Catalan-born factory manager named Melchor Marsa; and Frank DiCara, son of Italian immigrants in east Baltimore.
The list ranges from folk songs and Bing Crosby to Portuguese fado, and from Marc Ribot and Tom Waits to Brazil’s Caetano Veloso.
Check out the full playlist where you’ll find links for listening on Spotify.
Largehearted Boy previously featured a playlist for Soul of a People.
