Narratives of Formerly Enslaved Virginians

February 9, 2023 @ 11:30 am - 12:30 pm EST

Free

In the 1930s, Federal Writers’ Project researchers with the Works Progress Administration interviewed formerly enslaved Virginians to preserve their stories. Library of Congress (LOC) Reference Specialists Dr. Sibyl Moses and Angela McMillian and author David Taylor will discuss the project, its legacy and LOC resources documenting the voices of enslaved African Americans.

Read a recent Washington Post article related to this topic about how those interviews came about, the challenges the interviewers faced, and how those firsthand accounts of slavery have inspired later generations.
