Film screening – Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story
May 1, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - May 2, 2022 @ 4:00 pm EDT
FREEA screening and discussion of Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story will be hosted by the St. Augustine Free Public Library.
This program is free and open to the public, and will take place at The Waterworks, 184 San Marco Blvd., which shares a parking lot with the Main Library.
Soul of a People explores the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the controversial programs of the Works Project Administration (WPA), and presents a vivid picture of one of the most challenging times in American history. The Federal Writers’ Project was one of many New Deal programs put in place by the WPA, employing men and woman at all levels of society. This screening is provided through a special agreement between the Friends of the Main Library St. Augustine and the producers of the film. There will be commentary at the beginning of the program that will provide a look at WPA projects in St. Johns County that we still benefit from today.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Waterworks was built in 1898 as a pumping station for the City of St. Augustine’s first water utility. Now home to the St. Johns Cultural Council, this newly-restored building may be accessed through both parking entrances of the Main Branch Library, 1960 N. Ponce De Leon Blvd.
Doors open at 1:30pm, and seating will be on a first come, first served basis as space is limited. Refreshments will be provided. For more information, please call 904.827.6928 or email hgeorge@sjcfl.us.
